Tactical Rifle Scopes

Tactical rifle scopes are common accessories for military firearms. Tactical scopes have been used on rifles in the American military since the Civil War. However, only snipers used these devices until the 1990s due to the high cost of lenses and night-vision lights. Military work is hard on tactical equipment, and parts break with great frequency. The delicate nature of lenses makes them susceptible to scratching and cracking from environmental and weather conditions. However, recent advances in optical technology have made this kind of accessory more widely available to military units and have driven down the cost on older models.

Snipers use very high magnification on their rifle scopes, so that they can clearly see targets at great distances. This allows snipers to stay out of view as they approach their targets, especially night-vision models that do not reflect sunlight (which can give a sniper away). Snipers also use tactical rifle scopes with reticles that are unique to military use and allow them to estimate how far away they are from a target. This type of reticle is called the mil-dot reticle and uses a system of dots, rather that traditional cross hairs, to line up a target.
