Military personnel in battle need access to a number of guns on short notice, so tactical leg holsters often play a role in their battle gear. Tactical leg holsters are made from nylon or plastic to ensure the devices will not break during battle, causing the soldiers to lose the firearms or have them fall into the hands of the enemy. This device may be concealed underneath the soldier's pant leg at the ankle, or it may be worn around the outside of the pants at the thigh. Law-enforcement officers usually prefer a moderate amount of retention for the firearms they use on duty. Thumb-break snaps are common, requiring an officer to snap through a small strap with his thumb. Magnetic or spring-loaded flaps may also be used to cover the gun. This forces an officer to think for a moment before drawing and prevents easy access to the gun by criminals during physical encounters.
