Paddle Holsters

The paddle holster uses a stiff piece of leather, nylon or plastic to back the pouch in which the gun will be placed. This allows the gun to ride close to the body in concealed or non-concealed locations. In paddle holsters, most of the gun is visible; the device grips the gun around its middle, allowing the top of the gun to remain free. Some paddle holsters have open bottoms, so the barrel of the gun is also exposed, resulting in minimum coverage of the gun. The paddle holster is most often used by private citizens who carry guns for personal protection, but it may also be used by undercover law enforcement officers. One of the benefits of the paddle is that by keeping most of the gun free, it allows the gun to be drawn easily and swiftly, without unfastening anything.

Other types of concealed holsters include the pancake, shoulder and belt-slide versions. Some versions are also made that allow the gun to be kept on the legs at the thigh or ankle level. In contrast, duty holsters are attached to the belt on the outside of the clothing and are intended to keep the gun fully visible at all times.
