Duty Holsters

Law enforcement holsters may be visible or concealed. The most common type of law enforcement holster is the duty version. Duty holsters are worn by law enforcement officers on the belts of their uniforms, outside of their clothing. The visibility of their weapons is intended to discourage criminals from making trouble while letting civilians know the police are there to protect them.

Bianchi holsters have been made in the United States for nearly 50 years. The company was started by John Bianchi, a police officer who designed a holster that was right for him. The original versions of Bianchi's design had thumb snaps that could be broken to draw the weapon. The company even patented a design in 1970--a break-front holster that opened in the front. The company continues to make products today, including those designed for concealed weapons.

Law Enforcement Holsters for Police Officers

Concealed weapons assist law enforcement officials by giving them the element of surprise when it comes to encounters with suspects. This is especially true for undercover officers who dress in plain clothes. Federal air marshals also carry concealed weapons on planes. Marshals wear regular clothing on flights, but are armed in case of trouble on a plane, such as an attempted hijacking. Typical areas for concealed weapons to be worn are on the shoulders, thighs and ankles.
