Concealment Gun Holsters

Duty holsters are standard-issue handgun accessories for law-enforcement officials. They are designed to clip onto an officer's belt. Duty holsters are thus fully visible at all times and are part of the officer's daily work gear. The gun is usually worn on the officer's strong side--the side of the body that is the strongest. In most cases, duty holsters are made from nylon, plastic or leather because these are tough materials. The frequent handling of the gun in the duty holster makes it necessary for the device to be made from a material that will not break or wear down easily.

Since this device does not need to be concealed, it is made to hold only large and medium-sized handguns. Smaller guns would be more easily concealed under clothing, if needed. Duty holsters are also made with varying degrees of retention, depending on the needs of the officer. Retention refers to how secure the weapon is in the pouch. Most officers prefer a medium-grade retention, meaning the gun can be drawn quickly and easily, but not so easily that criminals can take it from the officer. Retention is built into this type of device using thumb-break snaps or spring-loaded flaps that must be disengaged before the gun can be drawn.
